MAKEUP HACK

MAKEUP HACK

ARE YOU USING THE RIGHT PRIMER ? (IT’S A CRIME NOT TO PRIME)

JUST LIKE DOING A BASE WHEN YOU’RE PAINTING YOUR NAILS, YOUR FACE ALSO NEEDS THAT UNDERCOAT.

The My Secret Lashes team have been discussing the science behind PRIMERS and have decided to pop on and explain a few make up basics which you may not know and you may find a few answers to questions you’ve been pondering on for quite some time, now stay tuned as we lay it all out simple for you.

What sort of disaster can I create if I mix a water based foundation with an oil based primer? WELL GF, you may as well grab a makeup wipe and call it a day because that base ain’t stayin at all….. let’s take, pouring oil into water, does it mix? No ….. they REPEL each other right ? Soo ultimately if you mix a water based foundation with an oil based primer your foundation is going to slip right off the skin which causes what we like to call “foundation movement”, let’s be real there’s a lot of victims out there of this….

I bet by now you’re hoping we present you with a solution? You are indeed correct…

WHAT TO DO –

Match your bases, check the first few ingredients on the back :

They will usually be one of three:

  • WATER: Water/Aqua/Eau
  • SILICONE: Cyclopentasiloxane/Dimethicone/Phenyl Trimethicone
  • OIL: Decyl Oleate, Lanolin Oil, (any type of oil).

Here’s the ultimate fact you MUST know …. So to find a primer with similar ingredients to your foundation can be easy you just need to pay attention, A LOT of foundations MAY list water as the first ingredient (this does not mean they are WATER BASED, they just contain a percentage of water for fluidity)  they usually then proceed to have a very high content of silicones or oils immediately after, in any case it’s about making sure majority of the product isn’t made up of water (unless you’re on the hunt for water based and have both water based foundation and primer), I’m sure by now you’re onto what we’re saying.

Now that you better understand why your foundation is functioning or better yet malfunctioning, lets chat foundations and primers that go hand in hand.

  • WATER: Pair Too Faced Born This Way Foundation with their Hangover Primer
  • SILICONE: Pair Hourglass Vanish Stick Foundation with their Mineral Veil Primer
  • OIL: Pair Josie Maran Vibrancy Foundation with Smashbox Primer Oil!

Annnnndddd if you’re not totally ready to go and find a matching primer and foundation, try using translucent powder under your foundation (we recommend Laura Mercier) this assists with the longevity and coverage of your foundation.

Furthermore to the Science of things concerning more foundation malfunctions, another you might have is FOUNDATION PATCHINESS.

DE-HYDRATION AND DRYNESS ARE POLES APART

When it comes to skin care it can be complex, convoluted and often requires a good investment of time (which we encourage you to do if you have time) however if you’re time poor, here’s something to remember:

Dryness takes place from a deficiency of oil in the skin. Dehydration occurs from a lack of water. Your skin could be SUPER oily but still significantly lack hydration.  GET THE MESSAGE YOUR SKIN IS THIRSTY.

Consider your thirsty skin as a dry sponge. If you put foundation on dehydrated skin, your skin is going to fundamentally try to ‘drink it’ in an effort to hydrate itself. This is why your foundation is going patchy…….. DO YOU CATCH OUR FLOW ?

Now, imagine that sponge was run under a tap until it was drenched (think hyaluronic acid serums and moisturisers). The sponge will no longer soak up any more fluid (or foundation).

HOW TO FIX THIS: Majority of Australians have dehydrated skin so whether your skin is OILY OR DRY Drink more and seek skin care products with hyaluronic acid, lactic acid, ceramides and glycerine for pre-makeup preparation.
